GIS Odyssey 2020 – Opening

Polish version of Opening

Dear Colleagues
and Friends,

Assoc. Prof. Agnieszka Bieda, D.Sc.

on behalf of the GIS Odyssey 2020 Organizing Committee, I would like to welcome you all to the virtual space that we have created for this year's Conference. I hope that, despite the limitations in mobility imposed on us by the current situation and the threats carried along, around the world, by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, you will find the spirit of GIS Odyssey here and that this meeting, despite the fact that it is so different from the previous ones, will provide you with what all the previous ones were delivering – Inspiring scientific debates and possibilities of getting to know another components the Adriatic countries culture.

Scientific dialogue is possible in the Online Poster Session section. We are inviting you to get acquainted with the works published there, to comment on the presented research results, as well as to ask questions to the authors. This section has two Moderators – Dr Anna Kowalczyk from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn (Poland) and Dr Kinga Szopińska from the University of Technology and Life Sciences in Bydgoszcz (Poland) who will take care of the quality of the discussions. I would like to thank them in advance for their work.

Since the Conference was originally scheduled to take place in the Veneto region (Italy), for the sake of spirit, we have prepared a mini-exhibition of photos of the Venetian Carnival taken by Prof. Małgorzata Chomicz. We've included it in the Field Session section. I would like to thank Professor Chomicz for sharing her photographs with us.

Before you start watching it, we encourage you to prepare something tasty from the Italian cuisine according to our recipe, which you can find in the Gala Diner section.

And here my speech was originally supposed to end, but it can't. Although, I would prefer the rest to be gone.

This year's conference is particularly difficult for us. However, for a completely different reason than the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic will end one day. This thought gives us hope for the next meetings. We even had plans for them, but the next meetings, if any, will not be the same.

On the 11th of August, the heart of GIS Odyssey stopped. Prof. Davorin Kereković, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, who for 27 years had been the driving force of Polish-Croatian cooperation in the field of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), suddenly passed away. He left as fast as he had lived. We didn't have time to say goodbye to him, so we're doing it now.

Davorin, I don't know if we can ever be able to continue your work. But we promise that if any of us could do it, GIS Odyssey will have your character. It will still be full of scientific passion and artistic spirit.

As Friends of Davorin, we ask those of you who believe in any Higher Power guiding our World for prayer and the others – for a moment of reflection.

With faith that Prof. Davorin Kereković is with us, I am opening the 27th Geographic Information Systems Conference and Exhibition GIS Odyssey 2020 and inviting you to the Online Poster Session.
